Quadriceps-Sparing Knee Replacement
Physician: Stephen J. Zabinski, MD
Marie enjoys Roller Skating and Skiing, this video of Marie Roller Skating was taken three months after her knee replacement.
If I had known how good this would feel, I would have done it sooner.
Three years ago, Marie’s knees started to prevent her from doing some of the things she had always enjoyed, roller skating and skiing with her family were no longer possible. Her situation started as discomfort then became debilitating. She knew she needed to do something, but mentally was not ready to accept it.
Many of her friends and neighbors had knee or hip replacements with Dr. Zabinski and were very happy with the results. She decided to get a consultation and see what he had to say.
Marie has osteoarthritis in both knees and hands. She first tried shots in her knees and noticed improvement, but not a total cure. After about four or five months she began to experience problems again. Dr. Zabinski had recommended quad sparing knee replacement, now she was ready to do it, she just had to decide which knee to do first.
Marie attended the Joint Replacement Education Classes at Shore Medical Center. She said that she learned what to expect, it really helped to set her mind at ease.
In June of 2013, Marie had total replacement of the left knee. The procedure was easier than she thought it would be, with less pain than anticipated and a quicker recovery. Marie said “after two weeks I noticed I was getting much better, that’s not a big investment of time”.
Marie came home after two days and went to the Bacharach Institute for Rehabilitation three days after surgery for their five day program. She then continued with Physical Therapy at Shore Orthopaedic University Associates for an additional eight weeks.
She continued to do the Physical Therapy exercises at home and eventually joined the gym. Three months after surgery, Marie was roller skating again and is looking forward to the upcoming ski season with her family. She has decided to have her right knee done next spring.
I am experiencing no discomfort in the joint, I’m really pleased. I can’t remember when my knee felt this good.
