SOMERS POINT – With the snip of a ribbon Friday, Dec. 6 by Dr. Stephan Zabinski of Shore Orthopaedic University Associates and architect Michael Graves a new phase of patient first care was welcomed to the city.
Graves utilizes firsthand knowledge when designing a building.
“I have been paralyzed for 10 years and I wish I had been able to come to a facility such as this one where there are no barriers. Patients are coming here to rehab and heal and they will be able to do that,” said Graves. “It rather takes your breath away, coming in here and seeing all of the design plans come together in such a functional and beautiful building.”
The design permits easy access to wheelchair-bound patients to intake desks and to exam rooms as well as the rehab facility that is just off the lobby managed by NovaCare.
The new Shore Orthopaedic site is the result of a collaborative effort. Scarborough Properties helped develop the project.
Sean Scarborough said the doctors wanted to create a destination for patients in Somers Point.
“They could have gone into a business park type complex that would have been much less costly, but that was not what they were looking to create,” said Scarborough. “As part of the community, Shore Orthopaedic wanted a facility that provides ample parking, easy access for patients, a pleasant atmosphere in the lobby and built a facility that adds value to Somers Point in terms of a tax ratable and it fits in well with the surrounding buildings.”
The site chosen by Shore Orthopaedic was once home to a bowling alley and movie theater a number of years ago, but has been a vacant lot along MacArthur Boulevard for some time.
The 10,300-square-foot building includes exam rooms, X-ray imaging services, physical therapy facility, medical offices along with the lobby and garden area. Scarborough said there is room to add a 3,000-square-foot expansion out the back of the facility if the doctors choose to do so down the road.
For right now, Shore Orthopaedic University Associates will continue to see patients through the end of the year at its offices located at 710 Center St. in Somers Point. Starting Dec. 31, the newly constructed offices at 24 MacArthur will handle all patient services.
Aside from the Somers Point office, Shore Orthopaedic has offices at 18 E. Jimmie Leeds Road in Galloway and 9 Stites Ave. in Cape May Court House.
Shore Orthopaedic University Associates includes Drs. Stephan Zabinski, Jack McClosky, Gregory Voit, Gene DeMorat, Richard Islinger, George Alber, Thomas Barrett and Ira Fox.
